The Standard Xoloitzcuintli is the largest Mexican Hairless Dog variety. It has a balanced, slightly elongated body, large upright ears and a long tail. Hairless dogs are best known, sometimes retaining a little hair on the head, feet or tail tip. Fully coated dogs also occur. Smooth skin and a spare outline create a recognisable appearance.
The breed belongs to Mexico’s older traditions. Its name combines the deity Xolotl with the Nahuatl word for dog. Pre-Hispanic beliefs gave it a role guiding the souls of the dead, and it also appeared in rituals. Mexican dog specialists worked to preserve it when numbers became scarce. The modern standard includes three sizes and hairless and coated varieties.
Xolos are usually calm, watchful and closely attached to family. They often initially observe strangers from a distance. In familiar surroundings they can be affectionate and playful, particularly when initiating contact. They may watch new events for a long time before approaching or vocalising.
