Wood mouse — size comparison — facts and sources

The wood mouse uses forests, fields and scrub where sufficient cover is available. Underground it builds passages with a nesting chamber and food-storage places. In colder periods it may also enter buildings, although its life is not tied exclusively to people.

At night or dusk it seeks seeds, nuts, fruit and invertebrates. Smell helps locate buried seeds. It climbs, jumps and swims well, aiding travel through varied surroundings. Food caching can also move tree seeds.

Several adults sometimes share shelters. A female with young may nevertheless exclude males from the nest. Offspring are born helpless and gradually become independent. In danger it can escape by leaping on its hindlimbs to the nearest cover.
