West Indian manatee — size comparison — facts and sources

The West Indian manatee lives in warm western Atlantic and Caribbean waters, also entering estuaries and rivers. It has a substantial body, small pectoral flippers and a broad, rounded tail. Mobile, bristled lips help grasp aquatic and waterside plants.

It usually moves slowly, alone or in loose groups. Much of the day is devoted to feeding; plant intake may amount to around one tenth of body mass. As an air breather, it regularly returns to the surface during rest and feeding.

A female bears one calf, which accompanies her for a long time and gradually learns local feeding areas. Suitable food and warm water are important. Manatees readily lose heat in colder conditions and gather seasonally in warmer waters in parts of their range. Threats include boat collisions and habitat loss.

Manat spędza wiele godzin na skubaniu roślin wodnych i regularnie wynurza nozdrza umieszczone wysoko na pysku. Naturalne środowisko gatunku obejmuje ciepłe rzeki, estuaria, zatoki i kanały. Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza skaluje zwierzę do 300 cm długości całkowitej. Około 110 cm wysokości pokazanej sylwetki wynika z jej naturalnych proporcji i postawy, a nie z osobnej normy gatunku.
