The Virginia opossum uses many North and Central American environments, from forests to suburban areas. Although it spends much time on the ground, it climbs well and uses varied shelters.
Omnivorous, it eats fruit, invertebrates, small vertebrates and carrion. A flexible diet helps it survive altered landscapes. Its prehensile tail assists climbing.
Usually nocturnal and solitary, it carries young developing at the female’s teats inside her pouch. Later they may ride on her back during outings.
