Verreaux's sifaka inhabits forests and scrub of western and southwestern Madagascar. It moves through the canopy by leaping, clinging to vertical trunks and branches. On open ground it may make characteristic hindlimb hops, balancing with its forelimbs.
It feeds mainly in the morning and late afternoon. It eats leaves, bark and flowers and fruit when available. Food composition changes with rainfall and season. It spends nights in tree crowns and by day alternates feeding with rest and basking on branches.
It lives in groups with distinct social relationships. Females usually dominate males. Scent marking of plants communicates presence and occupied space. Neighbouring-group encounters may involve calls, display leaps and other warning behaviours without direct fighting.
