Tayra — size comparison — facts and sources

The tayra lives in forests from Mexico into South America. It also uses secondary woodland and plantations if they provide cover. It rests in hollows, burrows and other retreats. It moves well both on the ground and among branches, combining running with climbing.

It feeds mostly by day. It hunts small mammals, supplementing its menu with fruit, invertebrates and other available foods. It may also use honey. Flexible feeding allows responses to seasonal forest changes. The tail aids balance on branches.

Solitary individuals, pairs and small groups occur. When threatened it may call in alarm and escape into a tree. The female cares for young in shelter. Wild reproductive details remain less well known than daily feeding and movement.
