The Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous marsupial found in Tasmania. It has a compact body, massive head, short limbs and dark fur, often with irregular white markings. It inhabits forests, heathland and open areas.
Usually solitary and nocturnal, it may gather with others at larger carcasses. Scavenging is an important feeding strategy, supplemented by hunting. Loud calls and conspicuous displays during feeding serve communication.
Young initially develop attached to the female’s teats and later remain in a sheltered den. White chest and flank markings vary individually. A thick, fat tail indicates good condition: energy reserves are stored there.
