The Svalbard reindeer is an endemic reindeer subspecies adapted to life on Arctic islands. It has a compact body, short legs and neck, and a relatively small, rounded head with short ears. Its back is brownish grey and its belly paler in summer; its thick winter coat becomes much lighter. The illustration shows an adult male in late summer with developed antlers.
It feeds on low tundra vegetation and remains on the archipelago throughout the year. Body mass changes markedly with season: the Norwegian Polar Institute gives males as approximately 65 kg in spring and 90 kg in autumn, and females as 53 kg and 70 kg respectively. The scale uses the source’s approximate male body length of 160 cm. Posture height follows the reconstruction’s proportions and is not a separate shoulder-height measurement.
