The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is an island subspecies of Asian elephant. It inhabits Sumatra's humid forests in Indonesia. A trunk, small ears and domed head create the typical Asian-elephant outline. Pale patches of skin may occur on the ears, forehead and trunk.
A herbivore, it gathers grasses, leaves, bark, roots and fruit with its trunk. Swallowed seeds may be transported elsewhere, so elephant movements contribute to forest regeneration. Extensive feeding grounds must also provide water.
Females and young form family herds led between feeding sites by experienced individuals. Forest fragmentation restricts former travel routes and increases contact with people. Connections between refuges allow groups to use larger areas and maintain contact between populations.
Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza używa 240 cm w barku: reprezentatywny punkt dorosłego zwierzęcia wewnątrz źródłowego zakresu 5–9 stóp, bez używania górnej granicy
