Steller sea lion — size comparison — facts and sources
The Steller sea lion inhabits the North Pacific and is the largest member of the eared seal family. Adult males have powerful necks, paler coats and much greater size than females. Like other eared seals, they have visible external ears and can bring the hind flippers beneath the body to move more easily ashore.
They feed at sea on fish and cephalopods and rest on rocks and beaches. Breeding colonies form seasonally. Males occupy sites within the colony and compete for access to females; pups stay ashore while their mothers forage.
Population histories differ, so one general description of threat would be misleading. Feeding conditions, accidental entanglement in fishing gear and environmental changes matter. Colony observations help track pup survival and the return of adults.
