The southern hairy-nosed wombat inhabits southern Australia. It needs ground suitable for stable burrows and vegetation supplying food. It builds extensive tunnel networks with several entrances. Underground shelter helps avoid extreme temperatures and offers rest between feeding trips.
It eats grasses and herbs, readily selecting fresh green shoots. During drought it may use leaves and stems of low shrubs. Food availability is linked to rainfall, so successive seasons affect activity and breeding success.
Burrows may form shared systems, although individuals need not rest together. It digs with powerful forelimbs and removes soil while backing out of the tunnel. The young develops in the female's pouch. The direction of its opening reduces soil entry during digging.
