Siberian musk deer — size comparison — facts and sources

The Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus) is a small, secretive herbivore of Asian forests and mountains. Although deerlike, it belongs to the separate musk-deer family. It lacks antlers; adult males have long upper canines used in competition with other males.

It inhabits conifer forests, scrub and rocky slopes where cover adjoins feeding areas. Leaves, shoots and herbs provide food. Tree-growing lichens become particularly important in winter, allowing feeding when snow covers the ground.

Usually solitary, it avoids open spaces. Its name refers to the musk produced by males. Harvesting this substance was one reason for intense hunting pressure on musk deer.

Zwierzę zamieszkuje tajgę i skaliste zbocza, gdzie gęste, kruche włosy tworzą skuteczną warstwę izolacyjną. Zimą dużą część diety stanowią porosty nadrzewne, uzupełniane pędami i roślinami zielnymi. Samce żyją samotnie i podczas rui rywalizują za pomocą wydłużonych kłów, a nie poroża. Doskonale zapamiętuje strome ścieżki ucieczki prowadzące między skałami i zwalonymi pniami. Przegląd morfologiczny z 2026 roku podaje 56–60 cm w barku; plansza używa środka zakresu, 58 cm, bez uszu i kłów.
