Sand cat — size comparison — facts and sources

The sand cat lives in scattered populations in the Sahara, Arabian Peninsula and Central Asia. It uses sandy and stony areas with sparse vegetation. By day it shelters from heat underground. It may use abandoned burrows or enlarge them itself.

It emerges to forage mainly after dark. Keen hearing helps locate rodents, including those hidden underground. It also eats reptiles and other available small animals. Prey moisture is particularly important where open water is scarce.

Adults usually travel separately. Contacts involve scent marks and calls, with encounters increasing during breeding. The mother cares for kittens in a burrow, protecting them from desert conditions. The timing of young varies regionally and depends on local conditions.
