Ringtail — size comparison — facts and sources

The ringtail occurs in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It uses rocky canyons, scrub and forests. Crevices and other sheltered places offer rest. Skilled climbing allows use of both trees and steep rock surfaces within its occupied area.

It emerges to forage mainly at night. It eats small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, as well as fruit and seeds. A varied menu allows use of seasonally changing resources. Nearby waterways may increase food availability.

Adults usually live alone, with contacts increasing during breeding. The female chooses shelter for rearing young. They gradually begin leaving the retreat and exploring nearby. Scent and calls aid communication, and rapid concealment matters during predator encounters.
