The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The reticulated python is a large constrictor of South-East Asian tropical forests and neighbouring islands. Diamond shapes and irregular lines form a net-like pattern across its skin, breaking up the long body’s outline among shadows, branches and fallen leaves.
It uses rainforests, wetlands and riverside habitats. It swims well, and younger animals climb trees readily. Mammals, birds and other vertebrates are seized with the mouth and subdued by coils. Mobile skull joints allow it to swallow prey wider than its head without biting it into pieces.
Usually solitary, it encounters others more often during breeding. Females lay eggs and coil around the clutch. Hatchlings must immediately find food and sheltered hiding places. As the python grows, the range of prey it can take expands.
