Plains viscacha — size comparison — facts and sources

The plains viscacha lives in open areas of southern South America. It inhabits extensive burrow systems called viscacheras, where tunnels connect chambers and numerous exits. Shelters serve for resting, breeding and escape from predators. Some colonies use the same site across successive generations.

It is herbivorous, eating grasses, herbs and seeds. It forages outside the burrow but remains dependent on the ability to retreat quickly. It may also use crops, sometimes causing conflict with people.

It forms social groups containing females, males and young. Females form the colony's lasting core, while males move between colonies more often. Access to a group may be contested.
