The Persian fallow deer was considered extinct for part of the twentieth century. Rediscovery of a population in Iran in 1956 enabled conservation breeding to begin. Animals taken to European zoos later participated in recovery efforts.
It uses riverside forests and scrub providing food and quiet shelter. It feeds on grasses, leaves, shoots and seasonally available fruit. Females care for young that initially rely on safe surrounding cover. Male behaviour changes through competition during breeding.
The small number of founders restricted genetic diversity in restored herds. Breeding and reintroduction programmes therefore involve long-term tracking of individual ancestry and outcomes.
