Pacific walrus — size comparison — facts and sources

The Pacific walrus lives on shallow shelves of the Bering and Chukchi seas. Long tusks, a broad whiskered muzzle and a massive body distinguish it. Both sexes have tusks, although adult males’ are usually larger. Animals rest in large gatherings on sea ice or the coast.

They feed chiefly on bivalves and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Sensitive whiskers locate prey in sediment, and a walrus can suck a bivalve’s soft body from its shell. Tusks serve in competition and hauling out onto ice, among other uses. The genus name Odobenus refers to the latter behaviour, meaning tooth-walker.

Ice provides resting platforms near feeding grounds. When it is absent, animals gather ashore and may travel farther to suitable feeding sites. A female cares for her calf for a long time, with close contact also important while swimming together.

Zestaw tych cech pokazuje związek budowy ciała z siedliskiem, zdobywaniem pokarmu i codziennym zachowaniem dorosłych zwierząt. Plansza skaluje zwierzę do 290 cm długości całkowitej. Około 130 cm wysokości pokazanej sylwetki wynika z jej naturalnych proporcji i postawy, a nie z osobnej normy gatunku.
