The olive baboon occurs across an extensive part of sub-Saharan Africa. It uses savannas, scrub and forests, often travelling on the ground. Resting places and food access influence the group's daily routes.
It eats fruit, seeds, roots, grasses and other plant parts. It supplements its menu with insects, eggs and small vertebrates. Flexible feeding allows it to exploit seasonal resources. Individuals may select different foods while remaining in contact with the group.
Groups contain females, males and young, with complex relationships. Hierarchy and alliances affect resource access and social contact. Mutual grooming helps maintain bonds. Young remain in maternal care and later learn group behaviour through play and observation of other baboons.
