The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The North American porcupine lives in forests and rocky North American landscapes. It climbs trees well, although it moves cautiously. It shelters in rock crevices, root masses and hollow trunks. Some winter retreats are visited by different individuals over successive years.
Food changes with season and location. In spring and summer it uses buds, leaves and herbs, and in autumn also tree seeds. Inner bark layers, twigs and needles become important in winter. Nocturnal feeding alternates with rest near cover.
Outside breeding, adults often remain solitary. The female usually gives birth to one offspring, already furred and with open eyes. It soon begins trying plant food. Quills and the ability to climb trees help reduce contact with predators.
