Mandrill — size comparison — facts and sources

The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a large monkey of humid forests in Gabon, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. Adult males have a red nose, blue ridges on the muzzle, a golden beard and brightly coloured rump skin. These contrasts are weaker in females and young.

It spends much of the day foraging on the forest floor. Fruit, seeds, fungi, leaves, insects and small vertebrates provide food according to seasonal availability. It combines ground travel with using trees, and substantial jaws help break up food.

Mandrills lead social lives in complex groups. Colour plays a role in communication: blue and red skin tones may intensify during arousal. The adult male’s powerful build and large canines are conspicuous features associated with defence and social interactions.

Kolory wzmacniają sygnały społeczne, a masywna szczęka i kły pomagają w obronie. Zwierzęta żyją w złożonych grupach i większość czasu spędzają na żerowaniu na dnie lasu. Animal Diversity Web opisuje około 80 cm wysokości, a San Diego Zoo samce o wysokości około 32 cali. Plansza używa 80 cm do czubka głowy w pokazanej pozycji; poprzednie 75 cm nie jest już błędnie przykładane do barku.
