The Malayan porcupine occurs in parts of South and Southeast Asia. It uses forest habitats and places providing safe shelter.
It is herbivorous. It searches for food near the ground surface using smell and powerful limbs. Nocturnal activity and sheltered resting places make direct observations difficult. The availability of suitable plants and retreats influences which landscape areas it can use regularly.
Family groups may contain an adult pair and their offspring. The animals shelter in burrows and emerge to feed at night. Quills are modified hairs and provide protection against attackers. It may also gnaw bones it finds.
