Orca — size comparison — facts and sources

The orca is the largest member of the dolphin family. Black-and-white colouring, a pale patch behind the eye and a tall dorsal fin make it readily recognisable. It inhabits all oceans, from polar to tropical waters. Populations differ in diet, movements and social organisation.

Many groups have lasting family bonds, with young remaining close to their mothers. Sounds maintain contact, aid orientation and help detect prey. Distinctive calls and hunting methods can be passed on through social learning.

Some orcas specialise in fish, others in marine mammals. They may cooperate to chase, surround or separate prey. Such specialisation does not apply to all orcas: neighbouring populations can use very different food sources.
