Indian crested porcupine — size comparison — facts and sources

The Indian crested porcupine inhabits a mosaic of forests, scrub and open areas in South Asia and the Middle East. It uses rock crevices, caves and its own burrows. Underground passages provide cover during daytime rest and allow it to wait out unfavourable surface conditions.

It emerges to feed mainly at night. It eats roots, fruit, grain and other plant parts and may therefore also visit crops. Gnawing found bones helps it obtain minerals. When threatened it erects its quills, rattles its tail appendages and may back towards an attacker.

It usually forms a lasting pair, and adults may share shelter with their offspring. The young develop in a sheltered burrow under parental care.
