The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The hazel dormouse moves mainly through dense scrub and lower tree crowns. Flexible twigs and connected shrubs create a network of nightly routes. It spends the day in a spherical nest of plant materials hidden among leaves.
Its menu changes as flowers, fruit and seeds mature. It also eats invertebrates. Before hibernation it feeds intensively, accumulating fat rather than storing winter food. Marks left while opening nuts may reveal its presence without direct observation.
In winter it uses shelter closer to the ground. The female rears young, which gradually begin feeding independently. Continuous hedges and undergrowth help connect small refuges. For this arboreal rodent, a wide exposed strip can be a major movement barrier.
