Groundhog — size comparison — facts and sources

The groundhog uses open feeding areas adjoining forest or scrub. It occurs in meadows, fields and along hedges. It digs burrows with several entrances, allowing it to disappear underground quickly when an approaching predator is detected.

It feeds mainly by day, often morning and afternoon. It selects grasses, clover and other herbaceous plants. During summer it builds fat reserves. It hibernates in winter, with entry into winter shelter varying regionally.

Outside mating it usually lives alone. Males leave winter burrows earlier, searching for mates and establishing access to territories. The female cares for the young. Extensive underground passage systems also serve other animals using abandoned shelters.
