Grey squirrel — size comparison — facts and sources

The eastern grey squirrel originates in eastern North America. It particularly favours forests with oaks and other large-seeded trees. It can also live in parks and gardens if food and suitable resting places are available.

It hides nuts and seeds in numerous small caches. It uses memory and smell to locate stores. It feeds by day, travelling both along branches and on the ground. It supplements its diet with buds, fungi and occasional animal food.

The young are born in a nest or cavity and remain under maternal care. After leaving shelter they gradually learn to feed independently. People introduced the species to Europe. Its resource competition and transmission of squirrelpox virus affect native red squirrels.
