The grey fox uses forests and scrub, finding shelter and varied food. It is distinguished by adept tree climbing. It may use elevated places for shelter, although much feeding also takes place on the ground. It has a grey back and reddish sides.

It is omnivorous, hunting small animals and eating fruit. Diet composition changes seasonally. It is most often active at dusk and night, travelling along sheltered routes. Scents matter in recognising its occupied area and in contact between individuals.

The pair helps rear the young, which initially remain in a safe retreat. After leaving the shelter they gradually explore their surroundings and available food.
