Greater bilby — size comparison — facts and sources

The greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a marsupial of dry Australian areas. It inhabits desert plains, dunes, grasslands and scrub.

It feeds at night, seeking seeds, underground plant parts, larvae and other invertebrates. Smell helps locate food hidden in soil, while powerful forelimbs and claws serve for digging. Small feeding pits retain water, seeds and organic matter, creating more favourable places for plant growth.

It usually lives alone and uses several burrows within its occupied area. Underground shelters protect it from heat and predators and also serve females while rearing young. Introduced foxes and cats exert pressure on the species. Conservation includes preserving habitat and restricting these predators' access to refuges.

Rozbudowane nory zapewniają schronienie przed upałem, a kopanie napowietrza pustynną glebę. Suche sawanny, pustynie i półpustynie. Żywi się przede wszystkim: owady, nasiona, grzyby i drobne bezkręgowce. Nocny i samotny; wykorzystuje kilka nor w swoim rewirze. Na planszy przyjęto około 20 cm w barku jako porównawczy punkt dorosłego zwierzęcia. 20 cm jest przybliżeniem do barku; wielkie uszy i ogon pozostają poza skalą.
