Great white shark — size comparison — facts and sources

The great white shark has a powerful, streamlined body, a conical snout and large triangular teeth. Its dark back contrasts with a pale belly. It inhabits temperate and subtropical coastal waters and the open ocean. Tagged individuals reveal long migrations between distant regions.

Smaller individuals mainly eat fish, sharks and rays. Seals and other marine mammals can become important prey for larger sharks. They use sight, smell and the ability to detect weak electrical fields. Parts of the body remain warmer than the surrounding water, supporting activity in cooler seas.

Great white sharks are often encountered alone, although abundant food can attract several. They grow slowly and mature late. Additional mortality, including bycatch, can therefore have lasting effects on populations.
