The golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) is a small monkey of Brazil's Atlantic forests. Dense golden-red fur and longer hair around its head form the mane behind its name. The species is associated with wet forest and its canopy structure.
It eats fruit, insects and other small animals. While feeding it searches crevices, branches and dense vegetation, using food at different heights. Trees serve both movement and rest in sheltered places.
It lives in small family groups. Other group members also help care for young, reducing the female's carrying burden. Forest fragmentation hinders movement between suitable habitat patches. Its conservation history includes breeding programmes and returns to natural habitats, but lasting group survival depends on forest quality and connections.
