The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The garden dormouse is a small rodent in the dormouse family. Its distinctive features include a black mask around the eyes, large rounded ears and a furred tail ending in a contrasting black-and-white tuft. The grey-brown back contrasts with the pale underside. Head-and-body length and tail length are separate measurements.
It is mainly nocturnal. It uses woodland, rocky areas, orchards and gardens, sheltering in crevices, tree cavities and other protected places. It eats fruit and seeds, with invertebrates also forming an important part of its diet. In cooler regions it hibernates; the timing and duration depend on local conditions. It is distinct from both the edible dormouse and the hazel dormouse.
