The fox squirrel occurs in eastern and central North America. Its Polish name refers to black colouring, but this species is not always naturally black. It lives in deciduous and mixed forests and parks. Trees provide resting places and escape routes from terrestrial predators.
By day it gathers acorns, nuts and various tree seeds among other foods. It also uses other available food, including insects. Scattered underground stores help it survive colder months. Seeds left in caches may germinate and contribute to woodland regeneration.
Adults usually do not form permanent cohesive groups. Contacts intensify during breeding when males follow a female. The mother rears young in a nest and covers them with material while absent. Alarm calls, tail movements and scent serve contact with neighbours.
