The four-toed hedgehog is a small inhabitant of dry African areas. After dark it moves between cover in search of food, spending the day in a retreat. Spines cover its back, while pale fur covers the underside.
It obtains mainly insects and other invertebrates. It supplements its diet according to what it finds nearby. Smell helps locate food in darkness. When threatened it curls its body, protecting the more vulnerable belly, muzzle and limbs with a layer of spines.
It usually lives alone. The female cares for young whose spines are initially covered by a membrane. After gradual weaning, offspring begin feeding independently. Self-anointing the spines with frothy saliva after encountering a new smell is also known. The precise function of this behaviour remains incompletely explained.
