Domestic cattle — size comparison — facts and sources

Domestic cattle are herd-living ruminants associated with human husbandry worldwide. They take mainly grasses and other plants, which enter a multi-chambered stomach. Microorganisms there help break down plant fibres. Rumination means rechewing previously taken food, so a resting cow may still make chewing movements.

Calves stand and follow their mothers soon after birth. Initially they take milk before plants become the basis of their diet. The animals maintain contact with other herd members and use calls and body posture.

Holsteins are a recognisable dairy breed. Black-and-white patches are one example of that breed's colouring, rather than a feature of all cattle. Breeds differ in build, hair coat, horn presence and production purpose.
