The common vole occurs in meadows, pastures and agricultural areas of Europe and Asia. It uses burrows and grass cover. Groups may occupy shared areas, and nearby companions help respond quickly to movements or other signals of predators.
It feeds mainly on grasses and herbs, including crops. It gathers food under vegetation cover or in underground passages. It can return to remembered sites while food remains available. It does not hibernate, so accessible food is also needed outside summer.
Females may rear successive litters during breeding. Both solitary care and gathering young in shared nests have been observed. Voles are important food for owls, buzzards, kestrels and mustelids. They respond to danger by freezing or rapidly returning to a safe burrow.
