European hare — size comparison — facts and sources

The European hare uses open feeding grounds, fields and meadows adjoining sheltered places. It rests in a shallow ground depression rather than regularly using an extensive burrow. Vigilance and familiarity with its surroundings help it respond quickly to approaching danger.

It feeds on grasses, herbs and available plant parts. Its menu changes seasonally, and woody shoots may become more important in winter. It is most often seen during quieter activity at dusk or at night, although local conditions affect its feeding rhythm.

The young are born furred and with open eyes. The mother visits to nurse them, and between visits they remain hidden. Adult encounters during mating may involve chases and blows with the front paws.
