The Brazilian porcupine spends most of its time in South American forest trees. A prehensile tail and claws help it grip branches. By day it rests in branch forks and hollow trunks, while canopy cover keeps it away from many terrestrial predators.
It feeds mainly after dark. It eats fruit, seeds, leaves, flowers, buds and bark. It uses its front paws when opening fruit or stripping bark. It sometimes also uses crops where forests adjoin fields or orchards.
It may tolerate other porcupines but often rests and feeds separately. It communicates through calls and scent and erects its quills when threatened. The female usually gives birth to one offspring. The young can grip branches but gradually transitions from milk to plant food.
