Barbary macaque — size comparison — facts and sources

The Barbary macaque originates in the Maghreb, where it uses mountain cedar and oak forests among other habitats. The Gibraltar population was introduced by people.

It feeds on fruit, seeds, leaves, roots and other available items, supplementing its diet with animal food. Food choice changes seasonally. The animals travel near the ground and use trees as part of their living space.

It forms groups of females, males and young. Grooming and contact between individuals help maintain bonds. Rest takes place in selected, safer places. The absence of a visible long tail distinguishes it from many other macaques.
