Bank vole — size comparison — facts and sources

The bank vole uses forests, scrub and areas with dense ground-level cover. In British landscapes it also occurs beside hedges, on grassy margins and in gardens. Vegetation creates protected routes between feeding places and shelters from predators.

Most food consists of plant parts: green leaves, seeds and fruit. It also eats fungi, roots, flowers and moss. Variation in available plants means diet composition depends on surroundings and season. Unlike mice with pointed snouts it has a rounder nose and less exposed ears.

It is prey for predatory birds and forest mammals. Dense scrub and vegetation strips between forest patches shelter its routes from these hunters.
