Ball python — size comparison — facts and sources
The ball python is a small python from western and central Africa. It inhabits savannas, grasslands and forest edges, using burrows and other ground-level shelters. Pale and dark patches on the stocky body break up its outline among dry leaves and vegetation. Adult females usually grow larger than males.
It mainly hunts small mammals, although diet varies with location and age. It catches prey with its mouth and subdues it with coils, using both ambush and active searching. Chemical information collected by the tongue and heat-sensitive pits on the head help detect potential prey.
It spends much time under cover. When threatened, it may coil tightly with the head concealed. Females lay eggs and shelter them within their coils until hatching. Once out of the eggs, young snakes find food and shelter independently.
Źródło wyraźnie oddziela 25–43 cm po wykluciu od dorosłych 1–1,5 m. W obu ujęciach tułów pozostaje w pozycji bocznej, z lekkimi wygięciami. W drugim ujęciu tylko końcowy odcinek szyi i głowa są zwrócone do patrzącego. Skalę obu wersji ustalono z tej samej długości ciała i odpowiadającego sobie odcinka tułowia. Grubość tułowia i wysokość postawy są przybliżeniami rekonstrukcji, nie osobnymi pomiarami biologicznymi.
