Axolotl — size comparison — facts and sources

The axolotl is a salamander retaining many larval features into maturity. Feathery external gills, a broad head and a tail edged by a fin fold identify it. Wild individuals are usually dark and mottled, unlike pale varieties familiar in captivity. Its natural habitat is associated with the Valley of Mexico's waters, chiefly the Xochimilco canal system.

It remains aquatic throughout life. Molluscs, arthropods, small fish and other animals are sucked into its mouth. Limbs move it along the bottom, while the tail powers swimming. Regrowth of lost limbs and other tissues makes it important in regeneration research.

It reproduces without the usual transformation into a terrestrial salamander. A male deposits a sperm packet taken up by the female, which later attaches eggs to submerged surfaces. Habitat loss, pollution and introduced fish threaten wild populations despite extensive captive breeding.
