Arctic fox — size comparison — facts and sources

The Arctic fox inhabits tundra and Arctic coasts. It uses burrows in banks and hills, and in winter also shelter in snow. Short ears, a compact build and dense fur help reduce heat loss during long cold periods.

It catches small mammals, birds and eggs and also uses carrion and berries. Prey availability can vary greatly between seasons. Along coasts its feeding grounds connect terrestrial and marine resources. Colour changes with moulting, and a blue morph occurs alongside the white morph.

Pairs may maintain lasting bonds and share an area. The young are reared in a den. Their number and survival depend, among other things, on food abundance.
