Andean condor — size comparison — facts and sources
The Andean condor is among the world’s largest flying birds. Broad wings and black plumage contrast with a white collar around the bare neck. Adult males also have a head crest. It inhabits mountains and open coasts in western South America, using rising air for prolonged soaring.
It searches for large-animal carrion, spotting carcasses and other scavengers from the air. A strong bill tears food, while broad wings allow extensive patrols with little energy expenditure.
Nesting takes place in sheltered rocky sites. Parents care for a single young for a long time and do not produce many offspring rapidly. Adult losses therefore matter greatly to populations. Poisoned carrion is particularly dangerous, including when poison was intended for other animals.
