The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The African savanna elephant, Loxodonta africana, is the largest living land mammal. It inhabits African savannas, woodland, scrub and semi-desert regions. A massive body, huge ears and a flexible trunk distinguish it. It is a separate species from the African forest elephant.
Its varied plant diet includes grasses, leaves, bark, roots and fruit, changing with the seasons. The trunk grasps food, draws up water, investigates smells and makes contact with other elephants. Animals travel considerable distances between feeding areas and water.
Females and young form family groups with lasting bonds. Adult males more often live alone or in bachelor groups. Elephants communicate through touch, scent and sound, including very low frequencies. Older animals’ memories and learning from adults help young elephants navigate extensive, seasonally changing landscapes.
