The West Siberian Laika has a wedge-shaped head, upright ears and a strong, agile body. Dense hair forms a particularly full neck ruff. Its tail curls over its back, while an attentive gaze and quick responses emphasise alertness. Movement remains light despite its strength and a coat that visually increases body volume.
It descends from Khanty and Mansi hunting dogs associated with the Urals and Siberia. Early twentieth-century accounts still described separate local types. Their combination into one breed was proposed in 1947, and a new standard approved in 1952. Selection concerned woodland working ability above appearance alone, maintaining a strong link between breeding and hunting use.
Energetic and determined, it finds activities independently. It readily investigates tracks, watches movement and reacts quickly to game. It can be closely attached to people while working very independently. It will not always wait for encouragement to act.
