Greater pipefish — size comparison — facts and sources

The greater pipefish has a long, thin body protected by bony rings and a tubular snout. Brown colouring blends with vegetation and other coastal cover. It occurs in the eastern Atlantic.

It swims slowly, catching chiefly small crustaceans. Its narrow snout sucks in small prey at close range. The male takes over care of developing eggs, carrying them on his underside until the young hatch.
