European eel — size comparison — facts and sources

The European eel has a long, snake-like body. Dorsal, tail and anal fins form a continuous margin; pelvic fins are absent. Much growth may occur in freshwater or coastal waters. It feeds on invertebrates and fish.

Breeding is associated with the Sargasso Sea, and larvae travel from the Atlantic towards Europe. Appearance and physiology change before ocean migration. Females may grow larger than males. Unobstructed rivers connect growth habitats with oceanic reproduction.
