The Tyrolean Hound is a strong, medium-sized dog with dense hair and undercoat. It comes in red or black and tan. It has drooping ears and an elongated but well-muscled body.
It descends from local Tyrolean hounds. Planned breeding of selected lines began in the 19th century; a standard was drawn up in 1896 and recognised in 1908. The region formerly had more varieties, with red and black-and-tan forms chiefly surviving. They hunted hares and foxes independently and also located wounded game.
The Tyrolean Hound can concentrate on one scent for a long time and keeps its bearings when ranging away from its handler. It is determined but should not be nervous. Tracking is accompanied by a clear voice indicating its direction. Working alone distinguishes it from breeds shaped chiefly for large packs.
