The Transylvanian Hound is a strong, agile dog with black hair and reddish-brown tan markings. It has drop ears, powerful legs and a relatively long body. Its build combines large-hound endurance with agility needed in woodland. It is not massive and should move freely and change direction easily.
The breed is associated with hunting in Transylvania and Carpathian forests. Similar dogs were valued at local aristocratic courts in the Middle Ages. High- and short-legged varieties developed for different conditions and game. Numbers fell greatly in the twentieth century; planned recovery began in 1968. Today's breed retains mainly the long-legged type.
In familiar surroundings it may be calm and balanced, becoming determined and energetic at work. Courage combines with independence and persistent scent interest. It can handle difficult terrain without continual guidance. Gentle contact with familiar people does not remove its strong hunting instinct.
